What Kind of Writers Block Are You Experiencing?
"So you haven't been writing lately?" a friend or relative might say to you at some point. To which you respond with "Oh yeah I have writers block." This seems to allow them to understand, but the real question is what kind of writers block do you have?
I know I frequently leave this blog and my YouTube channel for extended periods of time. Its not that I'm not inspired I just have a habit of being lazy in my creative projects. This really needs to change and I am working on it. Updating my daily routine is helping, and that is most likely my biggest obstacle. I also tend to not want to put out anything unless I know its perfect. However that tends to lead me to not do anything because nothing is good enough.
You could attribute my most recent slump to lack of motivation, but I don't think that would be entirely accurate. I had motivation I just didn't do anything. Writers block due to lack of motivation is an incredibly real things and I have experienced it before and its not exactly easy to overcome. Natalie Frank from Owlcation has an excellent article on this topic. That article will be linked at the end of this post.
Mine and I'm pretty sure most writers least favorite type of writers block is caused by lack of inspiration. There is nothing more annoying than wanting to write and not knowing what to write about. I wouldn't say its the most common form of writers block, but it is the most well known. At least its the kind I remember learning about in school. I have been really lucky that in the last few years I haven't really been lacking in the inspiration department.
I'm pretty sure being lazy is the culprit behind my writers block this time around. There are a ton of excuses I could use, but I can't keep using excuse for not doing the thing I love. About two weeks ago I made the decision to update my morning routine. This so far has not only kept me from being lazy, but has also given me inspiration and kept up me being inspired. I actually look forward to getting up in the morning and going about my day. Its no longer a chore. Honestly I don't ever remember sleeping not being a chore and something to do because you have to in order to function.
This new appreciation for sleep has helped me wake up when I need too at around eight. Then I eat breakfast which is something I cannot skip. I don't know about you, but if I have an empty stomach I am not exactly the most pleasant person. Eating breakfast also helps wake me up and once I'm awake I can start being productive. After breakfast I spend at least and hour a day during some form of writing. It can be anything from writing a blog post or YouTube video, or it can be doing some personal writing. Normally its writing for my blog or my YouTube channel. This will hopefully allow me to keep up my schedule with only having two days a week off from my day job. Next time you see or hear someone say that keeping your house clean will help you feel better listen to them because I too didn't believe them. Well boy was I wrong because now that I have actually made and effort to keep my house clean I feel so much better. Now when I say clean its not spotless because I'm ok if it looks like humans live there just not unclean humans. Plus we live in an house that was converted into two apartments and it helps keep vermin down. At this point I am normally getting a little hungry and if its a day I have to work I will eat my big lunch so I stay full till about half way through my six hour shift. This is also the first time I turn on the tv and watch any sort of show.
If your like me and have simply gotten into a routine of being lazy and want to create I highly recommend creating a new routine. Take some time while your watching whatever its you watch and come up with a list of what you want to create. Now think of the time you have and what else you might need to adjust in your day in order to help you stay motivated. Just don't be too gung hoe about it because you can over do it and cause you to not keep up with your new routine. I know I'm guilty of this.
If you have stuck thru this far I applaud you because I know this was a bit ramblely. I hope you have enjoyed it and I hope you come back and read some more.
